Amplifying Bumble’s social impact around a historical platform update.

In 2021, Bumble gave its terms and conditions a groundbreaking update that explicitly banned body shaming in all its forms. To spread the message and amplify the positive impact of the app’s important decision, Bumble asked MG Empower to spark conversations around toxic behaviour in the online dating world.

Challenge.

Build competitive differentiation and brand equity on the back of Bumble’s decision to ban body shaming.

Bumble wants people to find a safe space in the knowledge that they’re not going to be abused for their individuality or appearance. The 2021 update reinforced this message – but we needed to tell the world about it. So our challenge was to spark important conversations around the importance of combatting online hate while promoting Bumble’s ethos of inclusivity and zero-tolerance for toxic behaviour.

Strategy.

Partner with on brand influencers to share stories and advice while tapping into a global conversation around self-confidence and authenticity.

Rather than giving the haters more air-time, we wanted our influencers to champion the positive message behind Bumble’s decision. So we asked a range of macro and mid-tier influencers, with cultural authority in diverse online spaces, to spark and participate in an empowering conversation around the importance of feeling confident and loving our authentic selves. Their content was engaging and informative but also fun and light-hearted – proving the ability of Bumble’s message to resonate with the full spectrum of lived experience.

Overwhelmingly positive reception from audiences in Germany and the UK.

With so many people excited to see Bumble as the first dating app to officially ban body shaming in all its forms, we showed 1.83M people that the app not only acknowledges social issues but also takes steps to actively eradicate them.
